Knowing what to do and how to handle any situation while out in the wilderness in imperative to staying safe, whether you are hiking, backpacking, biking or camping. Here are 5 tips everyone should know to stay safe as you hit the trails.
- Light a fire
Knowing how to light a fire is extremely important in just about any situation and can be very useful. It is impossible to know when the weather may take a turn for the worse, so having the skill of being able to spark a flame in unpleasant conditions is key.
- Be aware of your water sources
Hydration is very important and it should always be a priority to bring water along as you venture out. Should you ever run out, it is crucial to have alternative sources of water, whether it be a river or extra water that you have brought along on your trip.
- Bring a knife
Knives are useful in a variety of situations such as cutting ropes, cutting firewood, sharpening wood and cooking food. A knife with a fixed blade would be your best option, but a simple pocket knife is also good to have in most situations.
- A lighter
This one goes hand in hand with the importance of being able to light a fire. Bring a lighter and even a backup one to make sure you always have options for starting a fire.
- Know your surroundings
Familiarize yourself with the location you plan on hiking or camping at before going out. By doing this you will be able to have a better grasp of what to expect as far as weather, terrain and wildlife, and it is always nice to have an idea of what to expect.
