  1. Light a fire

Knowing how to light a fire is extremely important in just about any situation and can be very useful. It is impossible to know when the weather may take a turn for the worse, so having the skill of being able to spark a flame in unpleasant conditions is key.

  1. Be aware of your water sources

Hydration is very important and it should always be a priority to bring water along as you venture out. Should you ever run out, it is crucial to have alternative sources of water, whether it be a river or extra water that you have brought along on your trip.

  1. Bring a knife

Knives are useful in a variety of situations such as cutting ropes, cutting firewood, sharpening wood and cooking food. A knife with a fixed blade would be your best option, but a simple pocket knife is also good to have in most situations.

  1. A lighter

  1. Know your surroundings

Familiarize yourself with the location you plan on hiking or camping at before going out. By doing this you will be able to have a better grasp of what to expect as far as weather, terrain and wildlife, and it is always nice to have an idea of what to expect.
